Core Modules
All students are enrolled in 3 or 4 core modules, as shown below. Students join either the orchestra or jazz ensemble, depending on their preference.
Musicianship is only available at our Llandovery course.
Each module consists of ten 55-minute sessions (daily).

With our daily one-to-one sessions, our experienced tutors adapt tuition to your aims, your level, and your preferences. Perhaps you’re preparing for an exam, looking to improve specific skills, or learn an entirely new instrument - it’s up to you. It's included with all our courses as a core module.
Students must bring a selection of pieces with them, complete with accompaniments, if appropriate.

Musicianship
Enhance your critical musical awareness through this inspiring holistic and exploratory approach to music education. These interactive group sessions delve deep into key musical concepts, from breathing to harmony and more.
Course Outline:
Explore effective practice methods, memory techniques, and the art of expressive communication in performances. Each session builds a foundation for enriched musical experiences.

Jazz Ensemble
Whether you're a seasoned jazz musician or just starting out, the Jazz Ensemble promises an engaging and collaborative exploration of the rhythms, melodies, and harmonies that define jazz.
Course Outline:
Led by seasoned jazz musicians, this core module is perfect for students of all levels.
Cover a range of topics and refine your skills, such as collaborative improvisation, harmonising with your peers, different soloing and instrumental techniques, and more!
All musicians are welcome - saxophonists, pianists, bassists, guitarists, drummers, etc.
Please note: students are enrolled in jazz ensemble or orchestra, not both.
Orchestra
Develop your ensemble skills under the instruction of our experienced conductor and rehearse pieces for the final student concert.

Outline
Ten orchestra rehearsals are held during the course, although it will not be possible for more than one or two pianists to take part. No auditions will be necessary. The orchestra performs in the end-of-course concert.
Explore a diverse repertoire of classical and contemporary pieces, broadening your musical knowledge and refining your ensemble playing skills. Receive instrument-specific guidance in orchestral playing.
Please note: Students should have a basic proficiency in playing their chosen instrument.
Choir
Regardless of singing experience, every student is invited to discover the joy of creating music together.

Course Outline:
This module is designed for everyone. Students learn a repertoire of choral pieces to perform at the final student concert. The daily choir forms the basis of our LMFL community.
Sessions are once daily, typically before dinner.
Led by our choirmaster, William Godfree.

Composition
Embark on a creative journey in our composition module, suitable for students of all levels. Adapted to your level and goals.
Course Outline:
Dive into diverse areas of study, including melody, harmony, orchestration, rhythm, counterpoint, and more.
Create a portfolio of original compositions.
Have the chance to see one of your compositions performed at our student concert!
Students may use either manuscript paper or musical notation software e.g. Sibelius, Finale, etc.

Conducting
Gain the skills to lead and inspire musical ensembles.
Tutor:
Conducting courses consist of two classes:
Level 1: Beginners, without any experience in conducting. The course will give them the opportunity to learn the basic technique of conducting.
Level 2 Programme: Advanced level students with knowledge of conducting. They will have to study this year’s programme repertoire prior to coming to the course.
They will have opportunities to rehearse with the orchestra, and some will be chosen to conduct in the end-of-course concert. There are feedback sessions after each orchestra workshop.
Classes are individual and adapted to student’s goals and aims.
Music Theory & Aural
Suitable for those preparing for a graded examination or looking to enhance their understanding of music theory.
Potential Areas of Study
Delve into the essentials of music theory, such as key signatures, harmony, time signatures, and notation. If you’re more experienced, grapple with complex theory, from polyrhythms to microtonality and beyond!
Students may wish to study solely theory or aural, or a mix of both.
Exam Preparation
Tuition can be specifically tailored to prepare you for various music exams or exam boards. Whether you are aiming for ABRSM, Trinity, or another recognized examination, our instructors will guide you through the curriculum, ensuring you are well-prepared and confident on exam day.

Course Outline:
Learn how to craft effective melodies, write meaningful lyrics, use different instruments and arrangements, in addition to song revision and the basics of home recording – all backed by musical theory. Alternatively, customise the module to fit your particular interest.
Aims & Portfolio:
At the end of the course, a student will not only have a comprehensive understanding of the songwriting process but also a portfolio of original songs ready to be shared with the world.

Improvisation
Open to musicians of all backgrounds.

Explore melodic phrasing, voice leading, playing with strong rhythm and much more! Develop active listening skills and learn to respond dynamically in solo and group settings.

Both classical and jazz students can enroll. Any instrumentalists are accepted.

Refine your skills and cover a range of topics - collaborative improvisation, harmony, breath control, and far more!
The ensembles involve students of all levels. Students will learn a selection of songs to perform at the Student Concert and develop their ensemble singing skills.
Details
Participation in the vocal workshop provides an excellent complement to the individual classes and introduces singers to the disciplines of improvising and making jazz together.

This workshop perfectly complements your individual saxophone tuition. Engage with fellow students in small, interactive groups to refine your ensemble skills. This hands-on approach allows you to apply the techniques and theory learned in individual lessons to real-world playing scenarios.

Chamber Music
Collaborate with fellow students to form small ensembles, whether it's a string quartet, woodwind quintet, or mixed chamber group.
Outline
Groups are constituted before the course or on arrival according to students’ levels, instruments and preferences.
Students can opt to participate in multiple ensembles (e.g. string and mixed).

Much like our orchestra sessions, chamber musicians will work on ensemble-relevant skills and learn new pieces to perform at our student concert!

Opera Workshop
Step into the world of grandeur and drama with our Opera Workshop module.

Musical Theatre
Whether you aspire to tread the boards of Broadway or simply want to explore the world of musical theatre, our group workshop is your stage to shine!

Course Outline
Cover areas like vocal performance, acting techniques, dance and movement, and collaborating with other performers. Learn how to effectively express emotion through song & physical movement, and work with fellow performers. Bring characters to life with authenticity and depth.
Performance Opportunities
From classic show tunes to contemporary hits, the Musical Theatre Group Workshop culminates in a showcase where you can shine in the spotlight.
This module is only available at our Llandovery course.
Focused Language Groups
Dive into grammar, enhance linguistic precision, and refine your skills with dedicated, small group study.
The course aims to help develop competency in oral communication, develop a more in-depth knowledge of grammar, and enrich the student’s vocabulary by using appropriate teaching material suited to individual needs.
We recommend a combination of one individual lesson and one group lesson per day if maximum progress is to be made.
