Teaches Classical Voice & Opera

About Bernadette

Bernadette studied at the Rennes Conservatory, where she obtained prizes in music theory, cello, and singing. She then studied at the Lyric Art School of the Paris Opera for two years under Michel Sénéchal. She made her debut at the Opéra Comique in “Dialogues des Carmélites” by Poulenc, then at the Opéra de Saint-Étienne in Amadis by Massenet (recorded with the Paris Opera Orchestra). From 1989 onwards, Bernadette sang many leading roles in operas written by Mozart through to Britten in opera houses throughout France. She also regularly performs in recitals of mélodies and lieder with pianists Jean-François Ballèvre, Daniel Propper, and Jean-Yves Sébillotte, as well as in programs of sacred music at La Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. She won 2nd prize for opera at the Marmande International Song Competition in 1997 and 1st prize at the Verviers International Competition (Belgium) in 1993.

Since 2000, teaching singing has played a large part in her professional activities, with various sessions in various French conservatories. She also has many private students, including beginners, amateurs, young students, and many professionals. She now offers vocal technique courses to professional opera singers, supported by AFDAS.

Bernadette is also a Hatha Yoga teacher. Body work therefore plays a large part in her vocal pedagogy. She has a good written and oral knowledge of German, English, and Italian, as well as a good foundation in Russian.

Bernadette Mercier joined LMFL in summer 2024.
